Dark and Unusual Names

Good evening Dark Passengers! This is Star7. Jen has been insane awesome enough to allow me to post on her site.

Tonight we are taking a look at names. These are examples of darker and more unusual names. The idea for this article came to me when I was searching for a cool name for my new rabbit. I didn’t want her to be another Fluffy or Hoppy.

Choosing a less common name is a fun and safe way to let your dark passenger out to play! Why have another Spot or Rover when you can have a Butcher, Psycho, or Hellion!

I also think you may want to consider an unconventional name for your baby. My birth name (no, Star7 isn’t it, hehe) is very common. I sometimes wish my parents would have chose a more unique name to reflect my creative personality.

Of course for a child’s name you may want to show a bit more restraint. I’m not sure your little girl would appreciate the name Princess Lucifer Dragon Queen. You never know, but I’d trust me on this one.

Names such as Ara, Ayla, Calli, Colter, and Rory are different but would probably give your child much less of a complex than Princess Lucifer Dragon Queen.

I have mentioned examples of dark and unusual names in this article. Here is a handful of more names and a little information on them:

  • Raven ~ Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven”
  • Lestat ~ a vampire in several Anne Rice novels
  • Chaos ~ meaning confusion
  • Damian ~ hello! “The Omen”
  • Elvira ~ mistress of the dark
  • Hades ~ another name for hell
  • Lucifer ~ another name for the devil
  • Merlin ~ wizard
  • Luna ~ moon
  • Vega ~ star
  • Leo ~ constellation
  • Orion ~ constellation
  • Venus ~ planet
  • Pluto ~ planet

Yet another way to create a less than ordinary name is to combine more than one name. You can also take parts of a few names. Here’s how it works:

You can take Tom and Ella together you have Tomella. You can take Joe and Sara add an s and you have Joessara. Take parts of Joe, Sara, and Ella you have Joessarella.

I hope these examples of dark and unusual names inspire you to think a bit different and let your dark passenger out to play when choosing a name.

Thanks Jen for giving me the opportunity to post on Your Dark Passenger!!!

I feel compelled to point out that Hades, Venus and Pluto also have significance in mythology. I could pull the book of my shelf to spout off why they’re important, but then I’d just be outing myself as a total mythology dork! ;)

Star – Princes Lucifer Dragon Queen? You mean that’s not an acceptable name? Hmmm…*throws away form for legal name change*

I could’ve went on and on with the names in mythology. They’re so interesting!

Hun, you can still have the name :)

I know! I’ll get into a mythology text to verify one fact and the next thing I know, I’ve spent an hour getting ALL the backstory that led up to a particular name.

Babe, I think hubby would send me to a padded cell over that one. A lot I can get away with, but…that’s not one of ‘em. ;)

Fans of a particular tv show or series of books have been known to name their children after fave characters (me, I named my writing persona after a charachter from Buffy the vampire Slayer, LoL!) … not necessaruly “dark” names, but often just as scarring, I think… if I were named NYMERIA DAENERYS CERSEI SMIGRODZKI I’d change it as soon as I were able, no matter how much of a god George R R Martin is :p

Ahh…so many awesome possibilities from good ol’ Buffy. :)

But you know, I think it would be downright criminal of me to name a kid Dexter. I mean, great show and all, but isn’t giving someone that name sort of like giving his classmates license to beat the crap out of him in the school yard for years? :D
