Are Psychic Abilities Evil?

Happy Wednesday, dark passengers. This evening we continue our look at the relationship between religion and the paranormal by discussing what is perhaps the most misunderstood of paranormal topics: psychics.

Before we can even hope to tackle this topic, we must define evil. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary at my left, evil is defined as:

  1. The fact of suffering, misfortune and wrongdoing; a source of sorrow or distress
  2. Wicked; causing or threatening distress or harm

Now, I’m not sure about you, but I don’t find that definition useful. I’ve also heard evil defined as the utter absence of love. A more fitting word would be empathy, seeing as how serial killers are able to perform the heinous acts they do out of an inability to empathize with the suffering of others.

And how many would dispute that the acts of some serial killers are pure evil incarnate?

But I digress. Let’s just break down the concept of good and evil the way they break it down for children in Sunday school. God=good; Satan=evil. And yes, I’m aware that not everyone in the room believes in the existence of a devil who plots to take our souls when first we mess up, but just go with me on this, all right? This is, after all, part of a discussion on the relationship between religion and the paranormal. (And I know as fact that Satan is the head of all that is evil according to the Christian faith. I didn’t look into other faiths for this topic, so please post in comments what your faith believes is evil.)

So, now we’re left with wondering how psychic abilities can be evil and satanic in nature. This is the argument for why they are, as best I can understand it: Only God is supposed to know the future, thus, proposing you can also do this is an affront to the Lord, almost challenging His authority, if you will. To challenge His authority is another way to undermine His authority, thereby furthering Satan’s agenda. Evil.

Are Psychic Gifts from Satan?

Okay, so now we’d better address the giant neon green elephant trampling through the room. Where did these psychic abilities that are so evil come from? Satan?

Sure. Why not? If I were the leader of an evil army of demons plotting the demise of Heaven, I’d want to give all my peeps the ability to see the future (among other thing). Simple as pie. Psychics are part of Satan’s dark army of damned souls.

Except, how can Satan give humans the ability to know the future when only God’s supposed to have that power? Let’s face it, we wouldn’t even be discussing the validity of psychic abilities if psychics were ALWAYS wrong. Sometimes, they aren’t just right like they got a lucky guess; sometimes, psychics are spooky accurate about things they shouldn’t know.

This is a problem for the “psychics are evil” logic.

Are Psychic Gifts from God?

Now we begin a whole new quandary: If only God has the power to know the future AND there are those with legitimate psychic abilities, it follows that only God could grant individuals these psychic gifts. So…another problem here. If God is the ultimate example of good, how can abilities He doles out be evil?

Sadly, we’re going to have to stick a pin in this line of thought because we’ll go ’round and ’round on where psychic abilities come from. Let’s say it doesn’t really matter whether psychic abilities are from God, Satan or a simple fluke of genetics we’ve yet to fully understand.

How Can We Determine if Psychics Are Evil?

Bottom line: I don’t think we can know for sure. I’m not made of magic and I don’t have all the answers. But there are a few things I do know:

  1. Humanity has free will. That God knows the future of all time doesn’t lessen or take away my ability to make choices. And we’ll get into how that’s not an utter contradiction within the next few weeks…
  2. Though people can intend things for evil, God has the ability to use it for His purpose, for good.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter whether psychic abilities came from God or Satan because each of us has the choice of how we will use the gifts we have. It’s the same for any talent, not just those that are paranormal.

And now we’ve reached the portion where I deviate from what many of you probably think I’m going to say. No, I do not believe psychic abilities are evil, but I do believe psychics can be evil. How? Here you go:

  • The ability to know the future isn’t evil, but exploiting victims, widows and the desperate to make a few bucks is cruel.
  • The ability to know the inner thoughts, feelings and emotions of other people isn’t evil, but using that gleaned information about them for your own gain, to their detriment, is an invasion of personal privacy.
  • The ability to know what events will happen to a person isn’t evil, but telling the person what you saw/know, especially when you aren’t completely sure how to interpret it, is a risky proposition. At best, you’re messing with that person’s free will by giving them too much knowledge. At worst, you’re setting off the very course of events you saw by telling them what to avoid. (Not talking about little things, like seeing someone eating breakfast here, I’m talking about foreknowledge of pivotal events in ones life…the sort of events of dire importance.)

You’ll notice I didn’t call any of those actions evil. Taken to the extreme of each psychic ability’s downfall, there is definite potential for psychics to act in a manner consistent with evil. Like Spiderman’s uncle said “With great power comes great responsibility.” No, I don’t think that psychic abilities are on the level of “great power,” but they still come with the need for great responsibility and even greater caution. Psychics must walk a a fine line.

I’ve said my peace, now you say yours. Share your thoughts on whether psychics and psychic abilities are evil.

Tomorrow: Can Psychics be Christians?

Great post! I have a very strict Christian upbringing and it took me a while to come to my own conclusions. I don’t know what I believe about this in any black and white terms but I don’t think it is evil.

I think it’s probably a good idea to stay away from thinking in terms of black and white, right and wrong, etc with topics like these. Too often, we get so used to dealing in absolutes that we forget there’s a giant section of gray that just might matter.

It’s a great post, thank you for sharing this. i am currently writing an ebook on developing psychic ability, and part of that ebook dwells on the issue as to whether or not psychic ability is evil.

I believe psychic ability is not evil. It is a special gift from God and no other. It would be a great honor to be chosen for this gift. It is when the person abuses that gift, which is evil. Like money for example. Money itself is not evil. It is, after all, an inanimate object. What you do with it, now, that’s where the issue rises. If you fall in love with money, and become greedy, and cheat other people (or kill) to gain more of it, now that’s evil.

thank you for this post! I love it!

Thanks, Michelle. I’m always glad to hear when something I wrote helps – or at least resonates with someone else. :)

Good luck with your eBook. I’ve got a few in the works myself, so I know how much work they can be to put together.

        You are welcome Miss Jen!
While writing for my ebook, I have come across a lot of evidence that Psychic Ability comes from God, and therefore it is not evil. The story of Joseph in the Bible clearly shows that psychic ability is from God. When Pharaoh had a bad dream and asked Joseph to interpret his dream, Joseph answered, “I cannot do it. But God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.” Clearly, Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams was God-given.
Another evidence is the story of Daniel. Daniel saw visions of the future, of things that will come upon the earth. The future was revealed to him by God.

        Thank you Miss Jen!
