Releasing Negativity for Empaths

Happy Wednesday, dark passengers!  As you may already know, I’m an Empath and I like to talk about empathic abilities, so be expecting plenty of posts to come on this topic.  I’ve found that a lot of time and energy is spent talking about psychic shielding techniques for Empaths.  And that’s a good thing, don’t get me wrong.  Any Empath who would like to function in the world needs to know about proper psychic shielding techniques.

But what if negative emotions still manage to seep inside the shield?  What then?

Well, the Empath has two options available to them – assuming they even recognize that the negativity they’re feeling isn’t theirs.  Option 1 – Ignore it and live with it.  (And isn’t that a happy thought?)  Option 2 – Transmutate that negative energy out into the universe where it can be changed to something else.  (Gee…I wonder which option I’ll be using?)

Personally, I’ve always had trouble letting go of the bad.  It’s not that I enjoy negativity in my life; I just never learned how to let things go, I guess.  And that’s only referring to the negative emotions I create as a result of various interactions with other people.  This isn’t even scratching the surface of all the negative garbage I pick up unconciously as a side-effect of my empathic abilites.

Oh joy.

I was lucky enough to meet two other Empaths at a psychic development group I went to last week.  It was an eye-opening experience for me to be around people where I didn’t have to figure out how to explain what an Empath was or how I could possibly be experiencing the emotions of other people.  The fact that they have been utilizing their empathic abilities longer than I have and know some tricks was a nice bonus.

Here are the tips they passed on to me for releasing negativity:

  • Gather negative energy and throw it away. Trust me, it sounds more complicated than it is.  All you do is cup your hands in front of you as though you’re gathering water.  Imagine all of the negative energy you feel is being poured into your hands, filling them.  Once every last drop of it is in your hands, toss it all out into the air where it can be carried far away from you.
  • Toss negative energy out the window. Use the time spent sitting in traffic to your advantage.  Press your hand against the window and imagine all of the negative emotions and energy draining, first out of your head, then out of your whole body.  Let all of that negativity flow out of your hand, through the window and away into the universe.

I have to say, when they told me about the second method, the Empath actually warned me that I was going to look ridiculous doing that in traffic.  All I could do was laugh.  I mean, I’m the person driving down the road, screaming out the lyrics to my favorite songs at the top of my lungs.

Trust me, I already look like a crazy person all on my own.

So, Empaths out there…Make sure to let me know how it goes for you if you try either of these.

It’s so funny, I kinda stick my arms out and shake my hands if I’m trying to get rid of a negative feeling! I guess I knew how to subconsiously. I never thought to do it all the time though. Or that it actually worked!!

I’m also a natural empath. Love the picture of throwing it out a window!
If you haven’t experienced it, check out the truly the best tool I’ve ever found. I’ve been wearing one since 1994 – and it’s incredible.

Star – Sounds like your conscious mind is finally catching up with your subconscious mind, babe. :)

Carolyn – I took a look at the site and they look very useful. Right now I’m in the mode of trying a lot of mental shielding techniques while I’m still learning and getting to know some crystals and stones. Thanks for letting me know though. Never know when it might come in handy.

I’d better start gathering and find a big window. Nice to know someone else sings at the top of their lungs, key or off key?

  5. Jen says:

    Couldn’t hurt. ;)

Honestly, it depends on the song. If I’m screaming out Linkin Park or 30 Seconds to Mars lyrics then I don’t think it’s possible to be on key for screaming. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know…Somehow though, I doubt I’m in key. I don’t think song is one of my creative gifts.

I’ve tried it all, and nothing works so far…besides this constant balancing act ebb and flow of being out in the world, then tucking back inside. To add “failure at sheilding” or to get told “you just aren’t doing it right” always makes it that much worse. I’m guessing it is a lifelong process, but I’m not enjoying it a lot.

  7. Jen Whitten says:

Yeah, it really is a process…at least, if you want to get to the point where you aren’t constantly thinking about your shielding.

Have you tried wearing crystal quartz? I have that one made into a pendant and, without fail, I wear it every time I leave the house. I also have a ring that has a symbol on it that’s become a sort of personal talisman for me. The only time I take it off is if I’m getting my hands dirty cooking or putting on lotion.

Another stone that I have with calming/negative energy release properties is a chrysocolla. (I actually pulled out my crystal bible for that one so you’d have the correct spelling.) Not only does that one have a VERY soothing quality, but I can actually feel it’s vibrational energy when I hold it in my left hand.

If you aren’t using crystals/stones, I highly recommend them. I don’t feel like I finally got a handle on my shielding efforts until I started using them as part of it.

I’m under a deadline tonight, so let me finish with that and then I’ll look more into it. I think I’ve got some other less common strategies worth trying, but they’re a little more difficult to explain. I’ll put together a post on them (this site) and have it up as soon as I can…although, it probably won’t be until midnight/one o’clock central time.

Thanks Jen. I look forward to it. In your own time…no rush…I’ve been dealing with it all my life already.

Off topic (not sure where to post or ask)…I’m looking for resources or any links or chatter about any discussions pertaining to astral travel (largely involuntary) and sleep apnea with subsequent migraines. When I “travel” it’s like my body lies there dormant and sometimes, apparently I stop breathing, and it often feels like blood wasn’t pumping. When I “come back”, I have a splitting headache, and this giant surge of blood flow pumping through my body…like it had stopped. Ever heard of ANYTHING like that? I don’t know that is what is happening…that’s what it feels like.

  9. Jen Whitten says:

It’s okay. I don’t mind off-topic. In fact, I probably take things off topic more than anyone else around here.

Are you sure you’re astral traveling when this happens? I don’t astral travel because I don’t like the idea of leaving my body, but I have some people I should be able to ask. Might take a few weeks to hear back from them though. I definitely need to do some research on that one.

Off the top of my head…maybe you have a grounding issue? And the fact that you’re not actually “there” is making your sleep apnea worse and more dangerous? Maybe you need to balance your root chakra or find something to help you stay grounded. (Hematite, I believe, is good for grounding.)

But I’m totally brainstorming off the top of my head with that. I’ll have to ask around.

  10. Cherrie says:

I’m pretty sure it is travel. Like dreaming but VERY linear…people I have never met, places I have never been situations that make sense. And I don’t do it purposfully…if I fall asleep…I’m gone. Not always…but often. Like I function in multiple dimensions simultaneously. Yes grounding appears to be an issue. I’ve worn enough hematite and other stones to sink me if I fall in deep water. And the empath thing is STRONG. I have healing abilities but often end up sick when I use them…I’ve prayed, grounded, used stones, stood on my head and whistled dixie and I appear to be permeable and not yet able to dent it. I’ve got a global maternal thing goin’ on. I don’t claim to understand any of it. To my knowledge, my “psychic side” came on suddenly about 6 years ago and I’ve been chasing my tail ever since…spirits…visitations, astral travel…none of it have I tried to do. So I’m definately on the hunt for resources. I started writing for the examiner after reading your article on Empaths. Thanks for the inspiration.

I’m glad I could provide inspiration…I just wish I could be more helpful to you. Still trying to track down some other avenues for you to explore, but I lost a lot of my links when I switched computers a few months back. There’s an Empath support group online that I found helpful in a dark time…still looking. :(
